Your skin is your body’s largest organ. It protects you from the elements e.g cold, rain, heat etc. Although it has evolved to be very strong it isn’t impenetrable. Skin troubles and infections can be caused by allergens, infection, hereditary factors and irritants in the environment. Skin conditions are skin problems ranging from small bumps on the skin to widespread rashes. It may ocur as a result of viruses, fungi, bacteria or parasites. Here are 5 of the most common skin conditions.

 

Cold sores

These are small, fluid-filled blisters that appear in clusters on or around the lips. They are painful and occur as a result of a viral infection and are contagious. It is caused by type 1 herpes simplex virus. While there is no cure, using antiviral meds can boost recovery time.

Eczema

This is a dry and itchy skin condition. It usually occurs during childhood. Atopic dermatitis, the type that affects children often causes red rashes on the face, scalp, hands and feet. The adult version may come with blistering. Although it may be chronic, it is not contagious.

Hives

These are itchy, raised welts which may be red or skin-coloured. It often occurs due to an allergic reaction. It can also be triggered by certain foods, medications, insect bites and exposure to latex. Although it is often temporary, it may also be chronic.

Lupus

Symptoms of lupus often ranges from fatigue to joint pain although some people may have only skin symptoms. The rash is often butterfly-shaped and spread across the face. It may also come in raised, disc-shaped patches in parts of skin which are exposed to sun. It is caused by an auto-immune condition where the body attacks it’s own tissues and organs.

Acne

Acne occurs as a result of oil and dead skin cells clogging your pores. Pimples located under your skin that erupt are called whiteheads while those that have been exposed to air are called blackheads. It may also be accompanied by various skin blemishes including pus-filled pimples, pink bumps, nodules or cysts. It is mostly common among teenagers.
