President of the United States, Barack Obama with the US  Defense chief Ashton Carter is on a trip to Saudi Arabia.

The visit, according to reports, is as a result of the strained relationship between the US and Gulf Cooperation Council countries visit to Saudi Arabia at a time of strained relations between the US and Gulf Cooperation Council countries (GCC).

Apart from meeting directly with the King Salman, Obama is expected to seat round table with Leaders from Gulf Cooperation Council countries. Mr Carter said they would be seeking help with military and naval operations to counter Iran’s “destabilizing activities” in the region.

Later in the week, after the trip to the GCC countries, President Obama will travel to the UK and Germany. The White House too has its own frustrations with Riyadh, some of which have spilled over into public comments.

The US support for the lifting of sanctions against Iran has damaged relations with Saudi Arabia, Iran’s biggest rival in the region. A bill that is being considered in the US at the moment could potentially allow American citizens to litigate Saudi Arabia over the 9/11 attacks.

The GCC countries includes Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman.
