This happens to almost all the girls there, and they are now known as ‘guevedoces’ – which literally means ‘penis at 12’.
When the babies with this rare condition are born, they appear to be female, but their testosterone flows at puberty which causes their voice to break and a male reproductive organ would grow. (The penis would grow and the testicles would descend).
In line with this, Dr Michael Mosley, a BBC presenter said, “When they’re born they look like girls with no testes and what appears to be a vagina. It is only when they near puberty that the penis grows, and testicles descend.”
Sometimes, Guevedoces are called “machihembras”, which means “first a woman, then a man.” copyright. www.naijapr.com
