Alphabet Inc.’s Google, Ford Motor Co., Uber Technologies Inc. among a group of companies are establishing an alliance to advocate for safety  rules for self-driving cars and facilitate their return to the American highways.

Volvo Cars and Lyft Inc. are also part of the group. According to a statement on Tuesday, they all aim to have the participation of lawmakers, regulators and the public to “realize the safety and societal benefits of self-driving vehicles.”

As stated by Uber, about 1.3 million people die annually in traffic accidents. Many of them are usually young people. “Self-driving cars can help save millions of lives.” The group stated.

The group indicated that the U.S. roads will be made safer and less jammed. But it noted as well that “one clear set of federal standards” is required to help facilitate bringing the vehicles to market.

It was gathered that, working with civic organisations, municipalities and businesses to achieve the intended goal is the first task of the group.

Meanwhile, a former administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, David Strickland, is expected to act as the Spokesman of and Counsel to the coalition.

According to Google, the self-driving car is an autonomous car, more like an electric car. For Google self-driving cars, the software installed in them is called Google Chauffeur. Lettering on the side of each car identifies it as a “self-driving car”. The project was formerly led by Sebastian Thrun, former director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and co-inventor of Google Street View.
