Dortmund’s Germany international defender, Matts Hummels, has handed in a written transfer request, the club has announced.

The defender has asked to be transferred to Bundesliga giant and Dortmund’s direct rival, Bayern Munich.

The defender has requested to be transferred to Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window. The club has however stated that they would only accept an ‘extraordinary’ bid

The defender’s future at Signal Iduna Park has long been up in the air, with speculation he would request a transfer in the close-season.

Prior to his transfer request, Manchester united have been rumored to be in the run in for the player’s signature. But the request has now given Bayern the leading position in the run in for the player.

Up until now, Bayern are yet to submit any official bid for Hummels, the clubs has confirmed.

A statement of Borussia Dortmund’s official website reads, “Mats Hummels has informed us of his wish to leave the club in the summer and he wants to join league rivals Bayern Munich,” a statement published on the BVB website reads.

“The club would like to point out that Mats Hummels, as is the case of the rest of the Borussia Dortmund team, has no agreed release clause.”

Dortmund have also added that the only a world class offer to tempt Dortmund into selling Hummels as he is tied to Dortmund till June 2017.

If he eventually makes the move, he would join the list of players who left Dortmund for their direct rivals. The duo of Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski have recently made the move across country.

Bayern have also been rumoured to be following the contract situation of MARCO Reus at Dortmund. They are thought to be readying a bid for the Germany international.

Though a lot of football analysts have condemned Dortmund for selling their best legs to Bayern, it appears it is all a means to strengthen the league.

It should be recalled that Hummels left Bayern Munich initially on loan in 2008 after having grown frustrated with his lack of chances. It now seems having established himself at the top of the game, the 27-year old defender craves a return back home.
