– Minister of Communication speaks at the #TechLaw Series

The Honourable Minister for Communication Technology, Barrister Adebayo Shittu, has said that lawyers are safe from becoming extinct at the hands of technology. He said this at the maiden edition of #TechLaw Series where he gave the Keynote Address. The event, which was organized by Mobile Monday Nigeria, was themed ‘Technology and The Law’.
Shittu also described the power of technology as one that makes everyone a deity saying, “…in the world of computing, we are deities, very small deities… but still deities”., The event had in attendance representatives of relevant stakeholders comprising lawyers, technology enthusiasts, start-ups, innovators, government officials and policymakers.
The minister also hosted a private session with select FinTech Start-Ups and the Y Combinator Alumni Network in Nigeria. At the closed-door meeting, industry challenges were considered with discussions focusing on how the government could add value and help players as well as start-ups with the right policies that would help their businesses thrive.
Speakers at the event include Dr Yinka David-West who is the Academic Director at the Lagos Business School, Co-Founder DIYlaw.ng Odunoluwa Longe and Flutterwave CEO and Co-founder Iyin Aboyeji among others.
The event which held on January 22, 2018 at The Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos attracted over 250 legal practitioners, start-ups and corporate organisations. Legal practitioners and professionals highlighted the effects of technology revolution on legal matters particularly in areas like artificial intelligence, fin-tech, the internet of things as well data volume and protection among others.
The MOMO #TechLaw Series ended with joint consensus between Fin-Tech start-ups, government policymakers, investors, lawyers and other players present that legal practitioners need to continuously incorporate digital into their core operations. This means empowering their workforce through training and providing adequate tools to increase capacity. There was also a push to transform their products digitally by Introducing technology to law students early in all institutions in the country.
Also represented at the event was the Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Lagos, Mavin Records and the Lagos Business School to mention a few.
