Cristiano Ronaldo yesterday scored an emphatic hat trick to ensure real Madrid progress to the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League at the expense of VFL Wolfsburg. Madrid lost the first leg of the tie played last week in Germany 2-0

In a game where chances were initially far and few between, Ronaldo broke the deadlock on the 17th minute before adding his second a minute late as he heads Luka Modric’s corner into the bottom corner to put the game on tie on aggregate.

It was as though Madrid went to sleep after the second goal as Wolfsburg came all out to get a decisive away goal which would swing the tie back in the favor. But the goal proved elusive as Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas was up to the task when tested.

Ronaldo completed the turn around on the 77th minute when he squeezed a free kick through the wall to complete his hat trick for the night. The free kick was the first for Ronaldo this season after going over 29 games without scoring from dead balls.

The goal meant Madrid would go through to face Manchester city who knocked out PSG 3-2 on aggregate, in the semi-finals.
