SAKHO GETS A 30-DAY BAN FROM UEFA

Liverpool’s France International Mamadou Sakho has been given a 30-day suspension by European football governing body, UEFA. After the suspension came after the body opened disciplinary case against him following a failed drugs test.

According to BBC, Sakho, 26, tested positive for what is thought to be a type of fat burner after the Europa League win against Manchester United on 17 March.

He was given until Tuesday to accept the charges or go for a confirmation by having UEFA test the B sample of his blood. He has however chosen not to challenge the result of the first test.

The suspension handed him by UEFA is however provisional. It is to cover the period of 30 days in which investigations by UEFA will be carried out. UEFA has announced that the date for the hearing will be scheduled for a later time.

In a statement on its website, UEFA said: “Disciplinary proceedings have been instigated against Liverpool FC player Mamadou Sakho, following the UEFA Europa League round of 16 second-leg match between Manchester United FC and Liverpool FC (1-1), played on March 17.

“The proceedings related to a violation of the UEFA anti-doping regulations, after the player failed a doping test at the above-mentioned match.

“The player did not request the analysis of the B sample. UEFA has now suspended the player provisionally for 30 days until a final decision is taken by the UEFA control, ethics and disciplinary body.

“The date of the disciplinary hearing will be announced at a later stage.”

According to BBC, the France international and his club had already agreed he would remain unavailable while a UEFA investigation was completed.

Kolo Toure, Sakho’s Liverpool teammate, was recently banned too for six months after test in positive to a weight loss substance which he said was recommended him by his wife.

If the same punishment is handed out to Sakho, he would be ruled out of any chance of representing the Les Blues of France at Euro 2016.
