SUPER EAGLES DEFENDER BANNED FOR THREE MATCHES
Super Eagles and Mainz 05 of Germany defender, Leon Balogun, has lost the hearing of his alleged improper conduct case and has subsequently been suspended for his clubs next three domestic matches.
Leon Balogun was suspended after being found guilty of violent conduct during a match with Frankfurt last weekend.
A disciplinary committee set up by the German Football Association to look into cases of alleged misconduct during matches in the German topflight football division has ruled that Balogun deliberately kneed Frankfurt’s Carlos Zambrano in the closing minute of Sunday’s Bundesliga match.
In addition to the ban, Balogun has also been suspended from all football related activities until the ban is served. Leon Balogun and his club have been given 24 hours to respond to the charges. The club can either accept of file for an appeal hearing.
The offence for which Balogun is being suspended for was not contained in Match referee Felix Zwayer’s post match report. The referee said after the match that he did not see the infringement. The infringement was however caught by the television cameras in the stadium.
The Nigerian international who has just returned from a knee injury has however been invited by Nigeria’s interim coach, Salisu Yusuf, for the country next two friendly matches during the next FIFA international window in June.
Leon Balogun who was eligible to represent Germany at the international level having represented the European country in several age grade competitions. He however chose the Super Eagles of Nigerian of the German national team when it appears his international future lies with the former African champions.
Balogun made his first competitive appearance for Nigeria in a friendly match against Mexico is March 2014. He was introduced into the game at half time. His debut however ended shortly after his introduction as he lasted just 20 minutes on the field of play.
He was trying to stop the ball from going out of touch when he crashed into a billboard. He was subsequently ruled out for eight weeks and didn’t play for Nigeria again until March 2015, almost a year later.
He last played for Nigeria against Egypt in their most recent AFCON 2017 qualifying match. with a loss against Egypt, Nigeria had since crashed out of the run in for the tournament to start next year.
