Nigeria: Amodu must not live too long in euphoria

Former Nigerian national team’s coach, Amodu Shuaibu has been brought back on board as the Super Eagles’ coach for his second spell. The appointment of Amodu has arrived yet again.

The appointment of Amodu as new trainer of Nigerian national football team coach had come after the voluntary resignation of  the team’s coach, now former coach, Sunday Oliseh.

All the same the appointment of Shuaibu is a good news, not only for the former Eagles’ trainer, or his fans but the Nigerian Football Federation.

Especially amidst the controversy and pressure of wanting to opt for a foreign coach.

Looking back at the performances of indigenous coaches in recent times, one would at least lend some kudos to an improved technical expertise of our home-made trainers.

We understand that most of our home based coaches still are in the shadows of Science that guides the football game, yet, a nation who has got a man of Amodu’s class as coach has for sure not chosen wrongly.

With the nature of event building up to Amodu’s new position, one may no doubt be tempted to assume that his appointment was an accident.

Frankly speaking, except the new coach realizes big time, the real scenario that ushered him into the scene, he will continue, for as long as he can, to relish in the euphoria of his new feat.

However, the earlier he does realize this, the better it serves him.

It will be recalled that though Sunday Oliseh had resigned not under threat or compulsion, but willingly, the situations that warranted the move was never a honey one.

Needless to say, Oliseh was already falling out of favor from fans assessment of the Super Eagles’ performance. The decision to resign willingly in some very real sense may have been otherwise described as a bold step or a cautionary one for that matter. Who knows, if he had been shown the handwriting on the bear wall?

If Oliseh hadn’t one bold to sack himself, how could one be so sure that he would not have been axed by the impatient NFF, mainly for the team failing to earn the AFCON’s ticket.

How helpful it will be not only for Amodu and his boys but for the next phase or chapter of the Nigerian football if the new coach.

How  fantastic it will be if Shuaibu if he also takes time to reflect on what led to the tide of Oliseh’s predecessor. Or should one mention of the risen and fallen hero- Stephen Keshi, the Christian Chukwku and the Adegboye Onigbinde of our time?

These are names that ring bells within the Nigerian football world.

One untold lesson every assuming Nigerian coach must learn is that ‘today, I am inn but tomorrow may be shown the exit door. So, rejoicing over an appointment more than is moderate may not be long lived before one is given the utmost disappointment.

Once, every incoming Nigerian coaching is able to bear this in mind, then they are forced to be conscious at all times of giving the best.

Perhaps, this was what was missing in Keshi, he won the nations cup in as many times but failed afterwards.

The Nigerian football world is not a place to describe as final destination. Rather, it a place whose job security cannot score 1 on the scale of 20.

It is the expectation that Shuaibu swings to earnest action of ensuring that his calculations and formula yield result. This early stage of his appointment should be the most testing for him.

This is when he has to bring in the needed science, get back his compass to scout players who will not only fit in his game but qualify to work with an entire team to achieve positive result.

On a final note, it is suicidal to do a particular thing in a particular way and expect different results. Celebrating the little feat while more task is expected of one might lead to yet a regrettable disaster.

Therefore, it is only wise that this tumultuous and trying time for Nigerian football is best utilized to turn things around.
