– Chelsea have repeatedly chosen foreign players over home grown ones

– Chelsea academy is more of a business making establishment than one entrusted with making a future for the club

– To get a chance at Chelsea, you must have proven yourself; no one gets a chance to prove himself at Chelsea

Football is a game that offers every player 10-12 years at the top of. The peak is usually within the age range of 22-26. When a player turns 30, he automatically moves to the outside of life.

Chelsea has overtime been a club that favor experience over youth. But through the years, experience has been redefined to be inclusive of youthfulness and ability.

The age long tradition of fielding old players was first questioned by Andre Villas Boas. He decided to change the tide. He went for players below 23 years of age in the hope of changing the average team age of Chelsea.

He signed Mata, Lukaku, Marko Marin, De Bruyne, Oscar, Hazard, Courtois and Oriol Romeu. To avoid revolution, he sent most of the players out on loan retaining Hazard, Mata and Oscar and Marin.

However, because the results were not forthcoming, and Chelsea being a club that favors result over long term plan, Andre Villas Boas was sacked and the dream got destroyed.

In the season that followed, Lukaku, Debruyne, Mako Marin and Courtois were sent out on loan, and two seasons later, Only Courtois is remaining, and on the verge of leaving.

Mourinho tried to resurrect what got buried after Villas Boas but it went bad. He sold Chelsea’s best in Mata, he got Fabregas who almost singlehandedly marshalled Chelsea’s midfield to win the league. But a season after, everything came down like a pack of cards.

Mourinho wanted to build but has no view of what the future will look like. He kept the youth guys away, continue sending guys on loan, keeping barely twenty semi-old players at the club. He was doomed to fail. And after the sack, Chelsea still have not learn.

This season has taught most importantly that football is now a game for the youths. The top performers of the league are players under 23 with just the exception of Vardy and Aguero. Rashford, Martial, Alli, Eriksen, Mahrez, Iwobi, Coutinho, Lukaku, De gea, Danny Rose and Reece Oxford have performed outstandingly this season.

The English team is dominated by these relatively young players but unfortunately there is no player from Chelsea or man city. While Man city could be excused given their treatment and the development of Iheanacho who has gotten more than twice the number of minutes Loftus Cheek has got this season despite having a tougher rank of players, no apparent excuse can be offered for Chelsea.

At Chelsea, youths are just not favored.

For the much of the season, Chelsea lacked an instinctive finisher, but never for once tried to give Dom Solanke a chance.

Solanke scored over 40 goals for the reserve last season, so now you understand why he is refusing to commit.

Chelsea boast of the best academy in England in terms of talents and potentials. They have won the F.A youth cup back to back and also the UEFA Youth league.  Kasey Palmer was by far the outstanding player but the beat he will get will be a loan at Vitesse Arnhem next season.

When Chelsea had so much of a non-functional defensive midfield and Loftus Cheek was ready made, he never got a chance. It was revealed recently that Chelsea passed up the chance to sign Dele Ali because they had Loftus. While Loftus has made just 15 appearances with 2 goals, Ali has been the revelation of the season and he will be the PFA player of the season.

Chelsea is by far the club in England that has used the loan system more. But this system has yielded nothing.

Bertrand Traore has been nothing short of a fringe player since he returned from a loan spell. Coutois has been a shadow of himself since he returned from Atletico Madrid. De Bruyne was sold after returned from a loan spell at Weder Bremen. Marko Marin is on his third full season loan spell.

Atsu has not played a single match since he was signed from Porto. Isaiah Brown, Lewis Baker, Andreas Christensen, Tomas Kalas, Charlie Musonda, Victor Moses are just few of the outstanding talent on loan. Baker was Chelsea player of the season two years ago, he has still not made his full debut for Chelsea.

Mceachran was for a Long time the next big thing after Wilshere, he has been sent to the third tier of league football.

Lukaku and Debruyne were embarrassingly disposed by Chelsea, the two have come back to hunt Chelsea. Kevin has been the backbone of the Man city team that is now at the semi-finals of the champions League. Lukaku has scored 25 goals all season, 5 more than the strike force of Chelsea all joined.

At a time when Chelsea needed a goal scorer, they went for a half dead Falcao at first, and the Pato who needed two months to get back to fitness. When they had a certain Solanke, Bamford waiting to be called.

At a time Chelsea lacked Creativity, they stuck with a half dead Magic and a snail like Mikel with a dysfunctional Fabregas while Lewis Baker, Victor Moses, Charlie Musonda, Kasey Palmer were all raking assists for their respective clubs. Charlie Musonda particularly is so good he has been dubbed the new Paul Pogba.

At a point when Chelsea lacked a left full back, they decided to get an unproven Baba Rahman while they sent Bertrand on loan before he was sold eventually to Southampton.

Nathan Ake, another promising left full back, was sent on loan. Bertrand has gone on to become one of the best full backs in the league in just a season.

When Chelsea were in need of a man to stabilize their woeful back line, they went for the relatively unknown duo of Djilobodji and Hector while they had Christensen and Kalas on loan. It was in same situation Arsenal were last season when they recalled Francis Coquelin who has now gone on to become a force in the north London side.

Djilobodji played a game before being sent on loan. Pappy has gone on to become the most important defender for Weder Bremen.

Tottenham while in same scenario called in Rose who has gone on to make his full England debut. They used Kane who has scored as many goals he managed last season. When Manchester United lacked a cutting edge, they brought in 18year old Rashford who has contributed immensely to their success. Arsenal too brought in Iwobi. Man City has a certain Iheanacho who does the bailing out when called upon. But Chelsea? Falcao or Pato at best,

As a matter of fact, Chelsea is not a place for young player because they never valued them. A look at what has become of young players who left Chelsea to savage their careers.

Jeffrey Bruma has gone one to make his full international debut for Holland after he signed for Hamburger SV. Lukaku has become of one Europe hottest property since signing for Everton and he is a subject of a £50m summer move to Chelsea.

De Bruyne made over 30 assists to become the most creative midfielder in Europe last season. Man City spent 55 million to bring him to England. He has since scored 10 goals and assisted as many despite an injury plagued campaign.

Thorgan Hazard has gone on to become the most important player for Borussia Monchengladbach has won the player of the moth twice.

Despite the impressive performances Chelsea players on loan are churning out for their respective clubs, don’t be surprised if you see them playing in the U-21 league next season. That is how much disregard Chelsea has for the future of their youth players.

Chelsea has enough talent to successfully challenge the league for the next 5 to ten years. But no. The summer is going to witness a massive rebuilding process which will further limit the chances for the youth players.

Considering all this, it will be foolish for any player who has not won the Ballon D’Or at most or his club player of the season at least to sign for Chelsea.
