by CHASTE INEGBEDION
To celebrate 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, World Travel Market London is focusing World Responsible Tourism Day – including the WTM Responsible Tourism Awards – on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The WTM Responsible Tourism Awards are presented each year at WTM London, in front of an audience of 600 key influencers and decision makers. These awards are a center piece of WTM Responsible Tourism Day – the biggest responsible tourism event globally.
This year’s global Responsible Tourism Awards, to be presented on World Responsible Tourism Day, Wednesday November 8th at WTM London, are focused on tourism’s contribution to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, the SDG’s.
PADMAN is signing on to participate at this platform promoting the sustainable goals and issue its Sustainable Tourism Report in 2017, stating that sustainability is no longer a distant phenomenon but a reality that all destinations she visits most especially in advocating for Partnership for the Global Goals.
We believe we can begin to change the story of our school girls in Nigeria and we can also give the Nation an opportunity of having more of its girls attain their full potential in the society. PADMAN initiative through its projects ensures that our girls remain in school and finish their secondary education. This will also give our girls equal opportunity of participation in the future of Nigeria. Its projects are designed in line with the objectives of the following Sustainable Development Goals.
Goal 3 Good Health and Well-being – Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
Goal 4 Quality Education – Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all
Goal 5 Gender Equality – Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
Goal 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth – Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all
Goal 12 Responsible Consumption and Production – Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
The 2017 Finalists
The Awards this year focus on the SDGs but they will be announced in the following categories, Best for Accommodation, Best for Carbon Reduction, Best for Communication, Best Community Initiative, Best for Poverty Reduction and Best Tour Operator.
WTM London, Responsible Tourism Advisor, Emeritus Professor Harold Goodwin, said:
“We are looking for businesses and tourism organisation that can demonstrate their positive sustainable development impact. We recognize that smaller companies will have smaller impacts. However, smaller businesses and organisation are no less worthy of an award and should not be deterred from applying.”
The 12 finalists will now wait until the Awards ceremony at WTM London to discover who this year’s chosen leaders are.
